Moss and Fern Shawl
Also available on Payhip
This shawl was inspired by the woods around my home in Sweden. It has ferns and moss covered stones, lily of the valley, digitalis and blueberries, aspen leaves and the fun propeller seeds from the ash trees. The ash trees are dying in Sweden, they have a type of fungus which is spreading throughout the country. The trees slowly rot away and fall. Work is being done to try and save them, maybe a seed from one of the fallen ones will one day survive the fungus.
Difficulty: Advanced, some sections have combinations of knit/purl on WS rows where you will be asked to work in pattern (knit over knit and purl over purl). The ability to read your knitting is required. Only charts, no written row by row pattern.
Recommended Yarn: 100 g DyeDianaDye FlaxenSilk{lace}, 65% Mulberry Silk, 35% Bleached Linen, 875y/800m/100g, or any lace yarn that will hold a blocking. The total yardage needed will depend on your yarn choice and needle size and tension. With the recommended needle size you can work the whole shawl with only one skein of the recommended yarn.
Construction: The shawl is worked from the top down, with a small tab cast on using 7 provisional sts. It is bound off with small picots. If you hate picots, they can be left out.
Beads: Optional. Use size 8/0 seed beads, or the size you think fits your yarn. If you bead all the marked stitches, you will need 350 beads. Shown without beads.
Size: As shown 21 inches (53 cm) deep and 55 inches (140 cm) wingspan from tip to tip. The shawl is 148 rows and not designed to be made smaller or larger. If you want a larger shawl, use heavier weight yarn and larger needles (uses more yarn!)
Needles and hooks: US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needle or the size you need to get a fabric you like. Crochet hook the same size as your needles can be used for the bind off.
Other notions: Stitch markers to mark repeats if you wish. Small crochet hook or other gizmo for placing beads (if using beads). Darning needle.
