Mountain Mist Shawl
Originally released as a mystery knitalong for Spring 2015, with optional beading. The name was inspired by the original lace pattern which evolves and changes in a subtle way throughout the design, reminding me of the way in which a mountain’s features change as mist rises and recedes.
The design is both charted and written in full.
Designed for a single 800m/100g skein of a standard laceweight yarn, there is also a 4-ply version which can be knitted from a single 400m/100g skein. Either version can be adjusted to make a larger shawl by repeating various sections of the pattern, which will of course require extra yarn (and beads, if used).
As well as the laceweight yarns listed, I would also recommend the following 4-ply yarns if you prefer to work in a slightly heavier yarn:
Alpaca/BFL 4-ply
Baby Alpaca 4-ply
Baby Alpaca Silk 4-ply
Baby Alpaca Silk Cashmere 4-ply
Baby Camel Silk 4-ply
Blue Faced Leicester 4-ply
British Alpaca Silk 4-ply
Merino Silk 4-ply
There are two options for allover beading. The shawl can also be knitted without beads or beaded in selected sections only.
The allover laceweight with full beading takes just over 2,200 beads, while the reduced beading version requires around 1,440 beads. To bead just the edging section takes around 900/570 beads for fully or reduced versions.
The allover 4-ply with full beading takes around 1,440, or 900 for reduced beading. Edging only would require around 600/350 beads.
Errata:
In v1.1 Chart B, row 7 should read as follows after the bracketed repeat: s1k2togpsso, yo, k2, k2tog, yo, k1, kyk, yo, k3
In v1.2 Chart F, row 21 should start s1pwise, k5 (instead of k2, k2), yo, s1k1psso, and end k2tog, yo, k6 (instead of k2tog, yo, k2, k3.
