Inspired by a mouse in the Laugh-O-gram Films studio in Kansas City where Walt worked for a time, Mickey Mouse was designed in 1928 after Disney lost creative control over his previous signature character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, to another studio. Animator Ub Iwerks helped to design Mickey’s body, head, and ears out of simple circles to make him easier to draw. Dubbed “rubber hose” design, his simple and recognizable shape made it possible to recognize him from any angle and gave him appeal to audiences everywhere. Similar in style and billed as Mickey’s leading lady, Minnie Mouse is often the catalyst for Mickey’s adventures (there’s not much he won’t do to try and impress her). Walt himself provided the voice for Mickey Mouse for many years—and briefly Minnie’s also—and received a special Academy Award® in 1932 for creating the iconic character.

A stylish addition to any Disney fan’s home, this adorable garland is worked in multiple pieces. Mickey heads are first worked in the round on double-pointed needles, moving outward with simple M1L increases topped with a suspended bind off to prevent curling. The ears are made the same way and attached using unwoven ends to make for less finishing to be done later. The optional extra step of blocking in a water-and-liquid starch mixture helps to stiffen the pieces. Mickeys can be turned into Minnies with easy garter-stitch bows! A long i-cord is worked, then the ears are attached at even intervals. Add more Mickeys and Minnies for a long party garland, or create just a few to keep you company while dreaming of your next trip to Disneyland!
