Muckle Toque
Deeply ribbed slouchy hat with a snappy fair isle pattern, topped with a dashing dotted pom-pom!
The first half is quick and mindless, a perfect take along project. The colorwork requires a little more attention but by then you’ll welcome the challenge!
Worked in the round from the bottom up beginning with a deep 1x1 rib for a folded brim followed by a bit of stockinette stitch and a stranded colorwork pattern.
The sizing is very forgiving and will fit many different heads. You’ll notice that I’ve made it in different weights of yarn, Heilo, which here on ravelry is called sport but in my opinion is more of a DK…and a worsted weight. Both are lovely hats. The one made with DK is a little..squishier..the worsted weight one a little ..denser.. but they both have the same gauge. The wonder and mystery of knitting! So that means you can attack your stash.
For hat only you will need about 180yds of MC, and about 75yds of CC1 and 50yds of CC2 . These amounts are generous, you might use less!
The 3 1/2 inch pom pom requires more yarn, lots more, what ever you have left of the MC and generous accents of the CC. Remember, the more yarn you use, the denser the pom pom. I’d say at least 50 yards. You can use up all the left over bits. But hey - a totally different color pom pom would be nice too, so all is not lost if you run out.
I’ve included pictures of how I make the pom pom dotted.
But come on, the hat is cute even without a pom pom.
Inspired by the toques of Quebec!
