Mud Season Hats
Mud season here in Maine can be fleeting (always to be hoped), but we rarely escape it--the ground is still frozen a few inches down, but the sky is blue, the clouds puffy white and the birds are singing up a storm. Unfortunately, this early warmth leads to the ground softening, but with no place for that defrosted moisture to go--hence the mud! This can cycle for days, leading to deep frozen footprints in the morning, slithery conditions during the sunny parts of the day, and, for the impatient gardener, buried tractors and rototillers! The best way to spend these days is in layers for warmth, along with a cap and mitts, and exploring on the rocky coast, enjoying the light and emerging warmth!

These yardages include enough main-color (MC) yarn for both brim options. Add ~25 yards of MC to make an optional tassel (instructions included) or pom-pom.
This pattern uses small amounts of four colors of sport-weight yarn: two blues, a cloud-white, and a soft beige.
The four colors can be worked in a simple stripe pattern or, for the more adventurous, in a zigzag pattern of stranded colorwork. There are hat sizes to fit baby-to-grandpa-sized heads and fingerless mitts in almost as wide a range, plus bonus instructions for thumbless baby mittens.
So, forage around your basket or drawer of colorful, sport-weight yarn, and knit up a quick spring hat or pair of mitts for an intrepid outdoorsperson in your clan!
Rauma yarns can be sourced here in the US at The Woolly Thistle, an on-line shop specializing in woolly wool. This is an affiliate link which generates a small commission for me at no additional cost to you!
