The Mullioned Cowl, knit in The Plucky Knitter’s Scholar 2.0, presents another backdrop for color fun. The patterning is made with slipped stitches, so only one color is used per round. The stashbusting potential is excellent — each stripe of color only takes a handful of yards, so use up those precious scraps of hand-dyed yarn! I used five background colors in the sample cowl, but feel free to use any quantity or combination you’d like.

And for Doctor Who fans — imagine using a solid blue as the only background color, for a subtle nod to a certain police box!

This pattern contains both fully charted and written instructions.

Recommended Yarn:
The Plucky Knitter Scholar 2.0 — 75% merino wool / 25% cashmere — 255 yds (233 m) to 115 g.

Yardage requirements per colorway, for cowl as shown:

1. Flannel (grey, ribbing color) — 104 yds (95 m)
2. Wintry Mix (pale grey, outline color) — 122 yds (111.5 m)
3. Two Drifters (blue, background color #1) — 27 yds (25 m)
4. Whatta Punk (orange, background color #2) — 18 yds (16.5 m)
5. Splendor (green, background color #3) — 18 yds (16.5 m)
6. Pinky Swear (purple, background color #4) — 18 yds (16.5 m)
7. Triple Crown (yellow, background color #5) — 18 yds (16.5 m)

Sizing:
One size, 24” (61 cm) around and 12.5” (32 cm) high. Width and height can be easily adjusted.

Gauge:
22 sts and 42 rows to 4” (10 cm) in Windowpane Pattern on larger needle, knit in the round, washed and blocked. (Stitch pattern makes a thick, compressed fabric.) Gauge in Seeded Rib is 22 sts and 30 rows to 4” (10 cm) on smaller needle, and 19 sts and 28 rows to 4” (10 cm) on larger needle.

Needles:
US 5 (3.75 mm) and US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles, 16” length

PLEASE NOTE: I knit very tightly. I used a US 8 (5 mm) for the bottom ribbing and color section, and US 7 (4.5 mm) for the top ribbing, but knitters who are typically “on gauge” will likely need to use 7 (4.5 mm) and US 6 (4 mm) needles. Very loose knitters may need to go down even further. Changes in gauge will affect finished size and amount of yarn used—to meet these dimensions, be sure to use the needle size that gives gauge.

Other Materials:
One stitch marker, tapestry needle, pompom maker (I used the Clover Large Pom-Pom Maker in the 2.5” diameter, button to secure pom-pom.)
