My First Project—Coasters
This coaster pattern was designed specifically as a first project for anyone just learning to knit. However, the coaster is simple and quick for more experienced knitters and produces a nice set of coasters. The size can be varied as desired and could also be made larger to use as a washrag.
The pattern requires the knitter to know only the following techniques:
CO – Cast on (pattern calls for backward loop cast on)
YO – yarn over
k1tbl – knit 1 through the back loop
sl1 – slip 1 purlwise
s1 wyif – slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front
k2tog – knit 2 together
k2togtbl – knit 2 together through the back loop
After just two lessons, my students have been able to work this pattern. As a new knitter’s first project, it is completed sooner than a garter stitch scarf or even a dishrag.
Because I borrowed several ideas from other similar patterns, I am making this pattern available for free to anyone who wants to teach new knitters…or anyone who just wants to create some useful coasters for their home.
I have declared it copyright by Phrancko Designs, LLC, to prevent anyone from copying the pattern and then selling it as their own design. Anyone may use it freely or copy it, print it, and share it with others. Just don’t try to sell it or claim it as your own pattern.
Enjoy,
Phrancko (aka Frank Jernigan)

top, almost completely in the round…a unique and simple approach to work a sweater with set-in sleeves.
