This shawl celebrates the shared heritage between the knitting tradition of today and our history. The pattern is part of My Roots Series; a pattern series with the theme of our Estonian knitting folklore and is the signature pattern.
The shawl has been inspired by traditional Estonian motifs and is knitted using centuries old traditions originating from a small Estonian resort town called Haapsalu. It is my contribution to help to keep this amazing tradition alive. I used the Silvia pattern motif that contains small nupps which make the shawl feel very festive and majestic to wear. I regard it as both a tribute to the Estonian knitters of the past, and to modern lace knitters of the World.
Tradtional Haapsalu shawls are so fine they can be pulled through a wedding ring. They have been the symbol of Haapsalu for more than 200 years and are highly regarded. The art of knitting them has been passed down from generation to generation.
My Roots Shawl is a lace top-down triangular shawl, and was designed to be knitted with lace weight yarn, although fingering or light fingering weight could also be used. It is worked flat in one piece and consists of two identical triangles with a single spine stitch running down the center, with lacy nuppy blooms growing out from the diamond motifs. There are four stitch increases on every right side row; one stitch at each edge and two in the center.
The pattern is easily memorized and quick to knit. You can do as many repeats of the main pattern as you want;
The pattern includes large, easy-to-read charts that have the pattern repeats highlighted in red for ease of viewing and full written row-by-row instructions. There are also video tutorials and photos, and the pattern has been thoroughly tested and tech edited. You don’t have to print out the whole document.
Gauge is not crucial for this design, but if your gauge differs from the pattern gauge, the dimensions of your shawl will be different as well. If you knit at a looser gauge, you may need more yarn. You can keep knitting until the desired size is reached, or you run out of yarn. The shawl can be knitted in any yarn weight you like (fingering, lace or light lace weight).
