Myrtle cardigan
Pretty and feminine lace cardigan with three-quarter sleeves and scoop neck, worked in one piece to the underarms with seamless set-in sleeves joined and worked together with the body to the top of the shoulders. And don’t let the fingering-weight yarn fool you! The airy lace stitch is easy to memorize and makes this a quick knit, too. Myrtle is perfect for warming up a sundress or wearing over jeans on a cool spring afternoon.
Pattern includes charted and line-by-line instructions for lace.
Yardage requirements by size: approximately 900 (1050, 1200, 1350, 1500, 1650) yds. This should include enough for a generous swatch, but remember that every knitter is different, as is every yarn. Err on the side of caution and get an extra ball if your choice of yarn puts you close-but-not-quite to the total for your size!
2/6/11: I’ve noted that there are many project notes and forum posts regarding sizing issues for this design. The pattern notes say this, but it bears repeating here: I STRONGLY recommend swatching in the lace pattern with your chosen yarn, AND BLOCKING THE SWATCH, before beginning the project. This will be very helpful in determining how much yarn you will need, how much the finished garment will grow when it’s blocked, and how much negative ease you’ll want to include to show the motif to greatest effect.
Errata: The most current version of this pattern is Myrtle_082110_2.pdf; updates are free. If you have purchased an earlier version and did not receive or no longer have your update message, please PM the author for a download link for the current version.
Line 4 of written instructions for chart A should begin “k2, yo, k2tog,” NOT “k2, yo, ssk.” Line 16 of written instructions for chart A should end “k1, yo, ssk, yo, k2.” Lines 12 and 8 of chart B instructions should be the same as lines 4 and 16 of chart A, respectively.
Second paragraph on p. 7 for continuing sleeve join and shaping instructions should read:
All sizes:
Next row (and all following WS rows): Work in pattern across all sts. (Continue to follow charts A2 and B2 on either side of sleeves as begun above for size 2X.)
