‘Nafura’ is an Arabic word meaning ‘fountain’. Featuring short rows and lateral braids, knitted flat from side to side with a picot edging, the undulating contours of the stitch pattern in these mitts represents rippling water and perfectly shows off the subtle colour changes of the handdyed yarn of the same name.

The pattern and yarn were originally available as a kit from Fruitfulfusion.co.uk. I was inspired to design these mitts when I saw the beautiful Nafura colourway and it felt so appropriate to name the design after the yarn when I learned the true meaning of the word ‘Nafura’!

Yarn
Fruitful Fusion Merino Nylon Fingering 75% merino, 25% nylon (425m/465yd per 100g skein):
1 skein Nafura

Yarn substitution:
Approximately 145m/159yd of fingering weight yarn (quantities may vary depending upon gauge and type of yarn).

Needles and Notions
2.75mm/US 2 (or size required to obtain gauge) preferred needle(s) for narrow width flat knitting and spare gauge-size (or below) needle for 3-needle bind-off.
Crochet hook of similar size to gauge needle and waste yarn for provisional cast-on, tapestry needle for finishing.

Gauge
35 sts and 36 rows to 10cm/4in, after wet-blocking, across charted stitch pattern. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain gauge.

Measurements
Length 14cm/5.5in, palm circumference 19cm/7.5in unstretched. The mitts are shown on a hand with palm circumference 19cm/7.5in and will stretch to fit a larger size. Suggestions are given in pattern for increasing the dimensions for larger hands. Allow for additional yarn quantities.

Skills Required
The pattern uses German short rows and lateral (or Vikkel) braids to create the textured pattern. Other techniques include provisional cast-on and three-needle bind-off.
