The nature around us plays a big role in our lives. While working on this pattern the Icelandic nature started acting out a little bit more than usual and I picked those color combinations to describe those moments. The first pair is made from simple winter colors, gray, black and white. The second pair is made from earth tones to connect with the thousands of earth quakes that shake a part of the country. Then there was the volcano eruption, as pairs 3 and 4 describe. This pattern gives you all the color combinations.
The mittens are worked in the round from the bottom to top using 5 double pointed needles, followed by knitting the thumb using 4 double pointed needles.
Begin with needles US 1.5 (2.5 mm) and knit the edge, the cuff chart pattern and the Latvian braids. Then change to needles US 2.5 (3 mm) and knit the body of the mittens chart pattern.
The size is women’s medium but it is easy to change the size using smaller or bigger needles.
For a pair of mittens you will need 1 skein of main color, 1 skein of contrast color 1, 1 skein of contrast color 2 and 1 skein of contrast color 3. For contrast color 4 you may use any fingering weight leftover yarn you have.
