This gracefully modern interpretation of the traditional lace stole plays with clever, knitterly construction. Dawn Catanzaro gives her piece an unexpected 90-degree twist to make an impact with long lines of garter stitch. The center of the stole is knit up from a long foundational strip of lace, the lace of the short edges is accomplished together with the body, and the second long lace edge is worked as the garter stitches are bound off. Knit in Loft at an airy gauge, the fabric is light and warm as down.
CONSTRUCTION
- The stole begins with the bottom border, which is knit lengthwise until it is as long as the stole will be. Stitches for the main portion of the stole are then picked up directly from this piece, along with stitches from the provisional cast on, to begin the main body of the stole. It is worked from side to side; not from end to end.
- After the center panel has been worked, stitches for the right edging only continue to be worked as the top border, which will consume all remaining live stitches using a traditional knitted- on edging technique.
