The cosy, slightly slouchy Noga Hat is worked from the bottom up using Marlisle to create alternating diamond motifs. A 2x2 ribbed brim holds it on the head, and beyond that, the ‘background’ for the noga bloks is marled in reverse stocking stitch all the way to the crown (bad dental pun - the design is inspired a Dutch candy).

Marlisle is simple. There are sections you ‘marl’, meaning you form your stitches using both yarns held together and sections you ‘isle’, as in fairisle, as in stranded colourwork. To work the ‘isle’ stitches, you use one yarn only and let the other yarn float at the back, exactly as you do with standard stranded colourwork.

GAUGE
19 stitches x 26 rounds = 10cm x 10cm / 4” x 4” over reverse stocking stitch worked in the round on larger needle size using Yarns A&B held together, after blocking.

Swatching notes: You are looking for a dense, but not stiff fabric in the marled sections, so that the stranded colourwork diamond motifs do not get too lacey. Remember that many knitters get different gauge depending on whether they are knitting stocking stitch or reverse stocking stitch, and working in the round or flat, so if you do swatch (which is always advised), you should accommodate accordingly.

SUGGESTED NEEDLES
4.5mm (US7) for Brim.
5mm (US8) for Body.

Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Needle type note: You can use either circular needles long enough for magic looping or DPNs in each size, or use 40cm/16” length circular needles for the Brim and 60cm/24” for the Body AND a pair of DPNs or magic loop in the larger size to finish.
