I think a Grandpa Sweater is timeless and classic. It’s about the loose, comfortable fit and the cozy shawl collar. With my previous Dark and Stormy sweater, it was also about a deep, sophisticated gray and some distinct cables. That one is a favorite of mine, but I’ve always wanted to revisit the cable/color combination and play with it in a totally different Grandpa cardigan…

So here’s Nor’easter!! The overall silhouette is longer and a little slouchier this time, with a subtle A-line shape to allow for a bit more room down below. I added a split shawl collar, played with some cool new cables, and threw in a both a saddle shoulder and optional pockets. (You may notice Maya is pocketless in the photos - I added them after she left for college….)

I’m in love with the way the outer cables on back melt into the body, and I’ve found I really do like the more tailored look and fit of a good saddle shoulder. Plus, this longer looser body shape really works well my current skinny jeans/long shirt/short boot wardrobe.

The thing I kept was the deep, dark color. This time it’s madelinetosh Vintage in Composition Book Grey, which was previously discontinued, but WEBS has stocked up and will have more on the way, should they run out. (FYI - it’s part of the WEBS discount program - 25% off on orders over $120 and 20% on orders over $60! They may be putting some kits together too, which will pop up in a day or so.)

In writing this pattern, I thought a lot about what I’ve seen you do with D&S. I wanted to be sure it was easy to modify and fun to knit. The cables are charted and written out. A stockinette body allows for social knitting and easy alterations. Notes are in the pattern so you can play with shaping, width and/or length.

The split shawl collar breaks things up so you don’t have a sweater’s worth of ribbing to knit all at once. (But, for those of you who miss that ribbing, I added notes for substituting a shawl collar without the split if desired, as well as on adjusting the depth on this one.)

ERRATA:

A new version was sent out with revised Saddle Shoulder Shaping, as there was an error in the first version. This will address extra yoke depth and angle issues that I saw a few of you mention. Changes are on page 8. Also, please look at schematic depth for armhole plus saddle. You can shorten depth if you do not want slouch in shoulders. Be careful of picking a size that’s too large.

Middle of p.7, the note for 3 sizes only should read “51.25 (55.25, 59.25)”. This typo exists on the original version only.
