Nori the Narwhal
Hello:)
Nori is knitted in the round with the magic loop technique, you could also knit him on DPNs, if your prefer. His fins are also knitted in the round.
His eyes have been needle felted on with fleece and a felting needle but you could also use small buttons if this project is not intended for a small child.
Increases in this pattern are made with a kfb, knit into the front and back of a stitch and decreases are made with ssk and knit 2 together. There are tutorials and videos listed if you need assistance with these techniques.
When stuffing your narwhal, if you are knitting with a darker yarn, it is a good idea to use a stuffing that isn’t white, a colourful roving that is a similar colour to the yarn works well. When stuffing Nori, make sure that he is firmly stuffed.
Gauge is not too important when knitting toy patterns but you should ensure that the knitting is tight enough so that the stuffing does not show through. Varying gauges, yarn thicknesses and needle size will change the size of your project.
Narwhals are mammals, they are warm blooded, feed their young and give birth to live young. A baby narwhal is called a calf, males are called bulls and females are called cows. Narwhals cannot sleep for long periods of time because they need to surface in order to breathe. A group of Narwhals is called a pod. Male Narwhals cross their tusks often and this is known as tusking.
