Northern Lights
The Northern Lights shawl is crescent-shaped and designed to showcase variegated, hand-dyed yarns. The body is created with a reverse cross stitch, and the border is an undulating lace pattern, inspired by the shimmering lights of the aurora borealis.
The sample was knit in Dragonfly Fiber’s Pixie (colourway: Firecracker) and measures 68” along the top, 14” deep, and 82” along the curved edge (173 x 36 x 208cm).
Difficulty: advanced beginner
Materials and Tools:
- 400-450 yards fingering weight yarn
- 4 mm (US size 6) or 4.5 mm (US 7) knitting needles, straight or circular
- tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- pins, wires, and mat for blocking
- optional: 2 stitch markers for marking increase stitches at the edge of the shawl
The pattern provides both written and charted instructions for the border lace pattern, but written instructions only for the body of shawl.
