Notions of Colour Shawl
Impressionist artists like Monet were inspired by the visual effect of changes in the natural light on the colours of ordinary objects and landscapes.
I particularly enjoy colour work in knitting and have designed a shawl with 3 different stitch patterns as a basis to ‘knit’ the colours from my environment, for example an autumn landscape of a Scottish Glen or an avenue of cherry trees in full blossom.
It is part of my series of colourful, textured shawls, using 4ply or sock/fingering weight yarns. It is knitted from the top down, starting with a simple lace pattern, followed by a three colour border. The shawl edge is finished with a variation of the Old Shale lace pattern.
The pattern is ideal for those who like to experiment with different colour and light/dark combinations and with variegated yarns and who like to learn a new stitch pattern in a smaller project.
Measurements: approx. 70” (178cm) wide and 34” (86cm) long after blocking. The size can vary considerably with different yarns, needle size and the degree of blocking.
Recommended yarns: most fingering, sock, 4ply yarns are suitable. Typical yarn requirements are
Colour A (body): 440 yds (400m)
Colour B (in 3 colour pattern): 160 yds (140m)
Colour C (edging): 440 yds (400m).
Some experience with lace knitting will be useful. Skills required are working a shawl tab, left and right leaning and double centred decreases, knit into stitch below.
The pattern is in the form of charts and written instructions.
errata: Row 123: rep from* to last 6 sts, yo, skp, k1, yo, k3 -261st.
Chart 4: k centre stitch on RS and WS in row 125 to 150, but p in rows 151 and 152.
