HOOK:
US size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
SKILL LEVEL:
Adventurous Beginner - This pattern is for those crocheters who are comfortable with basic stitches and are ready to learn some new skills. Skills/concepts include front post stitches over multiple colors.
Notes from the Designer:
Nuanua means “rainbow” in Samoan. The body of this semicircular shawl is crocheted in linen stitch, which is simply alternating single crochet and chain stitches, working the next row’s single crochet stitches into the previous row’s chain spaces. Front post double crochet stitches create vertical stripes across the many colors of horizontal stripes, and colors change only at row ends. Just six increase rows are spaced throughout the body so that you can enjoy playing with colors without worrying about an ever-changing stitch count.

- Gauge is not crucial to this project, but will affect yardage and size. Our sample used almost an entire skein each of MC1 and MC2, so work a gauge swatch with any CC as follows: Ch 30, sc in second ch from hook, (ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch) across. Rep Rows 5 and 6 of Section 1 until you have 20 rows. Follow blocking instructions in the Finishing section at the end of the pattern.
- The pattern uses 14 colors but can be made with fewer if preferred. Total yards / meters used for our sample: approximately 1259 yds / 1147 m (MC1: 370 yds / 339 m, MC2: 385 yds / 352 m, CC: 42 yds / 38 m each).
- To avoid having lots of ends to weave in, work over yarn tails whenever you can.

“We need time to defuse, to contemplate. Just as in sleep our brains relax and give us dreams, so at some time in the day we need to disconnect, reconnect, and look around us.” – Laurie Colwin
