Numbat Cowl is done in collaboration with Serial Knitters’ in house dye studio Dyehouse Yarns.

Numbat was designed to use up your mini skeins in full. The sample uses seven Dyehouse Yarns 100yd (91.4m)/21g mini skeins. Six of them are worked mostly in the round to create a tube that later uses the kitchener stitch to bind the ends together.

The seventh skein is used to work a hidden pocket! For this section, you will be working the pocket flat and seaming the sides together. The pocket can also be omitted, if it is not desired.

While the original Numbat has a 31” circumference, other lengths are suggested to be able to work other lengths, if you think the cowl pictured is either too long or too short. Please keep in mind that this would require a different amount of yardage.

Materials
Yarn
Dyehouse Yarns by Serial Knitters Minis (80% superwash merino, 20% nylon; 100yds(91.4m)/21g) - 7 skeins or 700yds (640.1m) total of fingering weight yarn.
For the pictured cowl, I used 5 colors in a gradient color scheme, then connected them by using a color found in the two skeins on either ends of the gradient. The 7th mini is used for the pocket (if no pocket is desired, the seventh skein can be omitted.
About yardage: Each mini skein used on the exterior of the cowl was used up in full. The pocket took less yardage than the others; I used roughly half of that skein.
Substituting yarn: minis or scraps of other lengths can certainly be used, as long as they’re all fingering weight. If you would like to shorten or lengthen the cowl or are using minis/scraps with a different yardage, keep in mind that you will need an even number of minis for the cowl, and one additional for the pocket.
