October Twist Mittens
New techniques can be a lot of fun, and this design came about through a wish to combine colorwork with twisted stitches. The result is a tapestry-like web of chains running across a backdrop of another color—it looks a lot more complicated than it actually is! I kept the design very simple and repetitive, so it’s easy to add or subtract length. Though the chart looks challenging, there are just two 2-stitch combinations that are used in various combinations—a bit like knits and purls. The twisted, or crossed, stitches can be worked in a traditional manner with a cable needle, but it’s very straightforward to work without one. There are a couple of video links included with the pattern so you can see how to work each combination without the cable needle. I would definitely encourage a swatch before starting out if this your first twisted-stitch project!
There are instructions given for two optional cuff edges—a rolled edge or a ribbed edge. Charts are given for 2 sizes, each size including a chart for working the MC with a dark shade and another for using a light shade as the MC.
The resulting mitten is cozy and warm and should last through many winter seasons!
