Designed by architect John W. Maloney, Old Heat is the retired steam plant that provided heat for the Central Washington University campus until 1971. The smokestack with its distinctive design is one of the tallest structures in the city of Ellensburg.

Converted from an offset brick pattern to a standard colorwork grid, the OLD HEAT hat pattern is a two-color hat featuring stranded knitting. It is worked in Polka Dot Sheep’s Whitefish Worsted superwash Merino wool yarn; if substituting, use a worsted weight yarn with approximately 220 yards in a 100g hank. You will need two contrasting solid or tonal colors.

Old Heat is worked from the bottom up with a 1x1 rib brim, a single purl ridge that divides the brim from the crown, a stranded colorwork section, and finishes with evenly spaced wedge decreases. Note that largest size uses nearly all of the 50g skein--be sure to evaluate your gauge when making this size.
