The “On Top of the Mountain Shawl” presents a brand-new way to show off the colors in long-gradient yarns like Scheepjes Whirl. This design takes advantage of the slow color changes to add a dramatic color block along one side. Use any yarn with a long-gradient, or choose your own colors to create a truly unique gradient and color block.

Its symmetrical triangle shape and generous depth make this shawl a versatile accessory. Wear it as a neck scarf with a cardigan and jeans, or drape it around your shoulders on cool summer evenings.

The construction of this shawl involves simple stitches and relatively uncomplicated shaping, making it a great pattern for an adventurous beginner. With increases at the center of every third row, the shawl begins with a diamond-shaped Main Panel. This center panel is quick and easy to crochet, and the pattern is easy to memorize. After the center panel is complete, you will work one wing at a time, decreasing along the top edge to create a triangle. These wings require a little more concentration.

This is a great project to work on while watching your favorite show or while in meetings. Only one cake of yarn is needed (approximately 1093 yds/1000 m), so it’s also a perfect travel project!

Once you’ve finished your shawl, it’s time to add the tassels! The pattern pdf includes a 9-page supplemental with instructions to make 3 different styles of tassels for your shawl—a basic tassel, a crochet ring tassel, and a crochet puff cap tassel—as well as instructions for attaching your tassels to your shawl with two different methods to choose from.
