Description from pattern
Diagonally-striped, dyed, recycled-tee-shirt yarn cushion cover (pillow cover in US), decorated with flowers made from ruffle yarn.

Instructions are included for making your own recycled tee-shirt yarn and for making the flower embellishments.

This pattern has been designed to make it easy for you to adapt any bulky yarn and any reasonable gauge to make this cushion.

Required

  • Rag-yarn: Approx 213yd/195m of rag yarn, i.e. approx 6 large t-shirts dyed and cut into strips, max 0.75in/20mm wide.
  • Scraps of ruffle yarn: 3 yd/2.7m of pink/red/purple ruffle yarn makes 3 flowers for decoration; 2yd/1.8m of green ruffle yarn makes 6 trailing ribbons.
  • Strong 4ply sock yarn (scraps for sewing up and for button loops) with thimble and sharp tapestry needle. OR a heavy-duty stapler or staple gun can be used for seaming.
  • Buttons: 3 large buttons 1.25-2in/32-51mm for fastening. (Optional: buttons for flower-centres)
  • Needles: circular needle (for knitting flat) - metric 8mm; UK and Canadian size 0; US size 11 (or size to suit your rag-yarn after swatching). Smaller ndls (e.g. 4mm/UK8/US6) for flowers.
  • Cushion pad (pillow in US): 16in/41cm square (larger/smaller squares can be substituted)
  • Crochet hook (optional): approx size 4mm/UK8/US6 for pulling button loops through fabric before fixing them in place.
  • Sewing notions to join strips of yarn when cutting, and for repairing broken yarn while knitting.
