The pattern is given for both straight or circular knitting depending on your preference and is a great pattern for beginners.
It is also a great pattern for using up ends of bulky yarn as very small amounts are used for the stripes - or you could just use one colour for the contrast stripes, which would save buying lots of balls just for a few rows.
