Padot shawl is started from the lower corner. The main body is easy garter stitch and stockinette welts give the shawl a rhythm. After last garter section, the shawl is finished with a double I-cord border. Padot is an enjoyable and mostly a mindless knit. The construction of the welts is explained in the pattern. You could easily make the shawl bigger or even slightly smaller if you wish.

Padot is knitted in Suoma single, a squishy handdyed 1-ply Finnsheep yarn which has a beautiful earthly coloured palette. Many other different yarns could be used, so it is a stashbuster shawl too. Try knitting the welts in different colours for instance. Or try linen, yak, or alpaca. You can knit Padot in yarns of different weights.

As the welt stripes remind me of locks in the canals, I called the shawl Padot which means locks in Finnish. With this shawl you can construct the locks of your favourite colour in the shawl. While knitting the shawl, you can ease the locks of your mind. I hope this little design is helpful when you need it!

Materials

Yarn: Kässäkerho Pom Pom Suoma single 100% Finnsheep wool, non-superwash, (205 m=50g), 2 skeins of C1 Hups! – dark brown and 1 skein of C2 Koralli. 380m of C1 and 200m of C2 were used for the shawl, total of 580m.

You can use any yarn, but this will affect your gauge and the amount of yarn needed, and the size of the shawl.

Kaarama Rauni single, 100% Finnsheep wool, (210 m=50g),
Tolvila wool 1-ply, 100% Finnsheep ecological wool (220 m=50g).

Needles: US #4(3,5mm), circular needle of 80 cm. A dpn to use as double needle in CO.
Notions: Tapestry needle.

Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches / 10 cm in garter st with #4(3,5mm) needles, blocked. Please make a swatch and select a suitable needle size to get the right gauge. You can knit the shawl with a tighter or looser gauge, and get a bigger or smaller shawl.

Size: 15 x 63 inches / 38 x 160 cm.

Padot-shaali aloitetaan alareunasta. Se on pääosin yksinkertaista ja helppoa ainaoikein-neuletta, jolle eri värillä neulotut taitteet antavat rytmin. Padot neulotaan Suoma singlestä, joka on ihanan pehmeää käsinvärjättyä suomenlampaan villaa kauniissa murretuissa sävyissä. Monet muutkin langat sopivat tähän shaaliin, joten voit tyhjentää varastojasi. Kokeille vaikka neuloa taitteet eri väreillä. Tai kokeile pellavaa, jakkia, alpakkaa. Voit käyttää mitä lankaa haluat, mutta langan vahvuus vaikuttaa neuleen tiheyteen ja tarvittavaan lankamäärään sekä valmiin shaalin kokoon.

Puikot: 3,5 mm pyöröpuikko, pituus 80 cm. Sukkapuikko apupuikoksi silmukoiden luomiseen.
Tarvikkeet: Neula päättelyyn.

Tiheys: 20 s ja 28 krs = 10 cm ainaoikein-neuletta 3,5 mm puikoilla, kasteltuna ja pingotettuna. Neulo mallitilkku ja valitse sitten työhön puikot, joilla saat oikean tiheyden. Voit neuloa shaalin tiukemmin tai löyhemmin, jolloin siitä tulee erikokoinen kuin ohjeessa.
