Palazzo Cowl
Enjoy 20% intro discount with the code 20off till the end of the day Sunday, December 8th!
Palazzo Cowl was created to help with last minute gift ideas. Worked at a bulky weight gauge, it knits up really quickly and is very satisfying to work on. We don’t skimp on textures though! Estonian braids, nupps, slipped stitches and seed stitch all come together in a delightfully entertaining knit that’s fun to wear, too.
The cowl is worked flat with increases along one edge for the most of the pattern. The edges are polished with built-in i-cord that is continued in the i-cord bind off as well. Videos for nupps, Estonian braids, and i-cord bind off provided.
This design is a sister project to Palazzo Top and continues exploration of textures inspired by the abundance of details in Italian architecture.
Yarn
- Bulky to super bulky weight yarn, 260yds / 240m
- Sample yarn: Happy Place Apricity by Hobbii and TL Yarn Crafts (65% alpaca, 28% polyamide, 7% wool, 131yds / 120m, 1.75oz / 50g), color Amber, 2 balls
- Any bulky yarn would work fine for this pattern. If available, blow / tubular yarn will get results closest in drape to the sample. Please see the list of suggested options in the Yarn section at the top of the page.
Gauge
- 13 sts and 18 rows in 4” / 10cm in stockinette stitch, blocked
- Gauge is not crucial for the pattern, however, note that the difference in gauge will affect the size of the cowl and required yardage
Needles
- Swatch to determine the needle size that helps to fit the gauge; needle size below is a suggestion
- US 11 / 8mm straight or circular needles
Size
- Width at the deepest point in front 17” / 43cm
- Width at the narrowest point in back 4.5” / 11cm
- Upper opening circumference 22” / 56cm
Construction
-
The cowl is worked flat starting from the back neck. It is shaped with increases along one side.
-
Once the cowl reaches the required length, increases stop to create space for the future back neck seam.
-
The fabric is worked in a variety of horizontal textural patterns: Estonian braids, slipped stitches, nupps, seed stitch and stockinette.
-
All patterns are worked with the built-in i-cord edge.
-
The piece is finished with i-cord bind off, then seamed at the back neck.
-
The cowl can be made larger following directions provided in the pattern.
