ABOUT PATTERN:

The Palikka Socks are worked cuff down in stockinette stitch, incorporating easy colorwork. Palikka is Finnish and means ‘brick’.

The heel is constructed as a heel flap and gusset. Experienced sock knitters are welcome to use other heel types if preferred.

Note that this pattern does not teach you colorwork, so it is best to have some experience on that, or the willingness to do some research.

EU shoe sizes 34/35 (36/37) 38/39 (40/41) 42/43 (44/45)

US women’s shoe sizes 3½-4½ (5-6) 6½-7½ (8-9) 9½-10½ (11-12)

SUGGESTED YARN:

You can use any fingering weight sock yarn. For a pair of socks, you will need max. 100 g of yarn in total.

Yarn examples:

• Mondim, Retosaria Rosa Pomar, 100 g = 385 m

• Fischer Wolle, Feinstrumpf, 50 g = 205 m

• Opal, Sock wool, 100 g = 425 m

• Regia, Schachenmayr, 100 g = 420 m

COLORS:

You will need 5 colors in total.

1 main color - Sample sock uses white
4 side colors - Sample sock uses red, blue, green and yellow

Feel free to create your own color scheme or mimic the sample socks.

You will need the main color the most, and only a few grams of each side color.

The colorwork pattern is repeated 4 times, once for each side color. (Sample socks reference: white + blue, white + green, white + yellow, white + red)

The cuff, the heel and the toe tip are all worked in different side colors.

GAUGE:

26-27 sts = 10 cm 4 in

One block of color in the colorwork measures approx. 1.2-1.4 cm in width and 2.5 cm in height.

You don’t need a gauge swatch, if you work the first colorwork repeat of the sock, and then measure the size of the blocks. If your blocks are bigger, your sock will be bigger too, and vice versa. Adjust your needle size here if necessary.

SUGGESTED NEEDLES:

2.5 mm / 100 cm US 1.5 / 40 in or longer circular needles for the magic loop technique.

WORKFLOW:

This pattern is written for fingering weight sock yarn and 2.5 mm US 1.5 long circular needles and for the magic loop technique.

You will start by working the ribbed cuff.

From there, you will work the leg in simple colorwork to a desired length.

Once the colorwork part is finished, you will shape the heel by working the heel flap, followed by a heel turn and gusset decreases.

After this, the foot will be knit to the required length, and then decreases will be worked towards the tip of the toe.

Once there are only a few stitches left, the tip of the sock is grafted shut using the kitchener stitch method.
