Paper Boat
‘Paper Boat’ is a knitted version of a simple origami boat. As kids we made large ones out of newspaper to wear as pirate-captain hats, and little ones out of scrap paper to float in the kitchen sink. Warning: this version doesn’t float!
The hat is constructed in one piece, beginning with the wide brim. The instructions are written, not charted, and every second round is a ‘rest’ round. Skills needed include knitting in the round, knit, purl, and basic decreases.
Materials: 145-310 yards / 133-284 metres of sock or fingering-weight yarn. One 50g ball of Morris Empire 4ply will be enough for the Baby and Toddler sizes, but for the larger sizes you will need two balls. I used a marled black & white yarn to mimic newsprint. Choose a smooth, bouncy yarn for a nicely defined texture.
Sizing: Baby (Toddler, Kid/Teen, Adult Small, Adult Large)
To fit head circumference: 16”/40.5cm, (18”/45.5cm, 20”/50.5cm, 22”/56cm, 24”/61cm), with 0-2”/0-5cm negative ease.
Yds/metres required: 145yds/133m (180yds/165m, 210yds/192m, 270yds/247m, 310yds/284m).
