Pebbles and Sand Cowl and Stole is one of nine designs in The Sun and Fog Winter 2021 collection, a collaboration of knit and crochet designs by San Francisco Bay Area designers, dyers, and yarn shops, celebrating community and togetherness from the foggy shores to the sunny valleys of Northern California.

This textured cowl and stole evoke the pebbled and wave-rippled sand of a rugged Northern California beach. With varying rows of shells, mesh, and puffs, the fabric is at once airy and cushy.

The cowl is worked in one long piece, then seamed. The stole is worked in two long halves from the center foundation chain outward and features a simple beaded edging (beads are optional).

A partial stitch diagram is included.

This pattern uses American crochet terminology.

Skill Level: Easy.

Finished Sizes (after blocking): Cowl — 8” wide; 35” circumference; Stole size 1 — 9” wide; 61 1/2” long, shown at left; Stole size 2 — 13 1/2” wide; 65” long. Instructions are given for the cowl, with instructions for the stole (sizes 1 and 2) in parentheses ( ).

Yarn: Seismic Yarn Butter Single fingering-weight yarn (100% Extra Fine SW Merino; 437 yd 400 m / 100 g): 1 (2, 3) skeins. Cowl shown here in color Blue Pearl; Stole size 1 shown in color Fogust.

Alternate yarns:
Seismic Yarn Butter Sock fingering-weight yarn (85% Extra Fine SW Merino / 15% Nylon; 437 yd 400 m / 100 g).

(Budget-friendly) Valley Yarns Charlemont fingering-weight yarn (60% Fine Superwash Merino Wool / 20% Silk / 20% Polyamide; 439 yd 401 m / 100 g).
