…………………………………………………………………
Peppernut is a triangular lace shawl, worked top-down, in fingering or light fingering weight yarn. It pairs an attractive knit-purl stitch with an ample lace border featuring the beautiful Estonian-style bobbles called nupps. It’s named after the spicy Christmas cookie called Peppernut or Pfeffernuesse.
The pattern offers instructions for two different edging options: scalloped (as shown in the sample) or straight (not shown).
Size: The “wingspan” (width of top edge, after blocking) is 52 inches/132 cm.
Yardage: 575 yards/526 m fingering weight yarn. The sample shown in the photos was knit with Bare Naked Wools Stone Soup fingering 80% wool, 15% alpaca, 5% combination of tencel, bamboo, silk, and bison; 475yd/434m per 3.5oz/100g skein in the Pumice colorway.
Needles: You’ll need a 24- or 32-inch US4/3.50mm circular knitting needle and a 24- or 32-inch US5/3.75mm circular knitting needle (the smaller needle is used for the knit-purl section and the larger needle is used for the lace). For ease in working the nupps in the lace section, a needle with a fairly pointy tip is recommended.
Pattern difficulty: Intermediate/confident beginner. Experience reading charts (or willingness to learn) and some experience with lace knitting are helpful. Tips are offered for working the nupps as well as a link to a helpful video.
Skills required: Casting on, knitting, purling, increases and decreases, yarn overs, binding off, reading charts. Stitch patterns are provided in charts.
Gauge: 20 sts/36 rows = 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch after blocking
