Permission Slip
Dear Knitter,
Are you the kind of person who walks around asking permission to do the things you love? I know I am. I love permission. Permission allows me to act with a clear conscience, feel safe when I make decisions, and rest assured that I’m on the right track. However, often the authorities I am looking to for assurance, do not exist. Instead of taking this as freedom to do what I like, I’ve created little goddesses to micromanage all my projects. They tell me who to knit for, what colors to choose, when to knit, and which garments do or do not fit in my wardrobe. While, I thank them for their input, I have given them too much control over my creative process.
I started this project with a rough sketch and some beautiful yarn. I gave myself a few guidelines about the shape, and the general slip stitch pattern used. Then I let my imagination free to roam the future of my project, envisioning different pattern and color sequences. It was a wonderfully freeing knitting experience.
I gave myself permission to choose the colors that speak to me, permission to decide when I want to change patterns, permission to run out of yarn and decide it doesn’t bother me, permission to take a concept as far as I want, permission to change my plan halfway through, permission to hate my plan and start over, permission to not have a plan. I gave myself approval, freedom, and empowerment… to knit.
I made myself this permission slip, and if you need it, I give it to you.
Happy Knitting!
Maria
