Persephone, daughter of Demeter in Greek mythology, is kidnapped by Hades who took her to the Underworld. Demeter’s sadness at losing her beloved daughter is the explanation for the change of seasons from Summer to Autumn then Winter. Demeter bargains with Zeus for the return of her daughter.

They agree to Persephone returning to Demeter for half the year (Spring and Summer), and to Hades in the Underworld for the other half of the year. Demeter’s sadness at losing her daughter once more transitions the world to Autumn then Winter.

This sock represents Persephone reemerging from the Underworld; her mother, Demeter, brings Spring and Summer back to the world. and is a companion to Persephone Autumn Socks. Two different knitting techniques are used to achieve virtually the same result for “travelling stitches” that move back and forth across the ribbing: cables for Autumn and lace for Spring.

The Lace technique version is more forgiving. These socks can also be knit as a more masculine version by working the yarnovers through the back loop to eliminate the eyelets.

The Cable technique version (Persephone Autumn) will be less stretchy; you may need to go up a needle size or a pattern size.
