The summer-top behind the inspiration for the cardigan is found here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/petit-jardin-2

This pattern is tested (list of testers at the bottom of these notes) and I couldn’t be more happy about all the lovely samples of this cardigan!
Some of my testers added long sleeves, which makes this a cardigan-pattern for all seasons.

Design and construction
The cardigan is worked top-down and seamlessly.
(Full construction details at the very bottom of these notes).
This round-yoke cardigan offers a great fit, and is perfect worn over dresses, skirts, trousers.
The multi-textured yoke is as pretty, as it is fun to work.
For extra interest, some of the patterning is added to the hem.
The neckline, hem and cuffs are worked in 2/2-rib.
Sleeves may be worked to any length.

Materials
Yarn: I recommend that you use a fingering weight yarn, that knits up to gauge, to work the top. I used “Tosh Merino light”, in the colourway “Jade“, from Madelinetosh, to work my top. This fingering weight, merino yarn, comes in skeins of 107 gr/3.77 oz and 385 m/421 yards. You will need approximately 780/860/940/1020/1100/1200/1320/1440 m = 850/937/1025/1112/1200/1308/1438/1570 yards of this specific yarn to work the top. Needles: a circular needle 80 - 100 cm/32 – 40” long, size 3 mm/US2.5, to work the yoke/lower body. A set of DPNS (or a circular needle if working the magic loop), size 3 mm/US2.5, for the sleeves. Use the needle size needed to obtain gauge! Notions: 2 removable stitch-markers. Cable-needle or a DPN (for working the clusters). 9/9/9/9/9/10/10/10/10 buttons 14 mm/0.5” across. Waste-yarn, (or separate holders), for keeping the underarm-sts. Tapestry needle. Blocking tools. A row-counter is always useful.

Gauge
26 sts and 38 - 40 rounds in stockinette sts and textures, (except for the little leaf-pattern), after blocking/washing = 10 x 10 cm/4 x 4”.

The pattern

  • The pattern is tested and proof-read
  • Skill level: intermediate
  • The pattern of the yoke and hem is charted, as well as written out, row-by-row
  • There is a schematic
  • Measurements are given in cm’s, as well as in inches
  • Instructions for swatching in stockinette sts, or in the textured pattern are included
  • instructions for placing buttonholes.

Techniques involved

  • cast-on, bind-off
  • increases (by m1l/m1r)
  • short-rows (to shape the neckline)
  • picking up and knit sts (underarms and button-bands)
  • working textures according to charts and/or written instructions

Construction
The cardigan is knit seamlessly, from the top down, starting with the ribbed neckline, followed by a section of short-rows to shape the neck, in order to get a deeper front than back.
Thereafter the rounded yoke is knit back and forth, using a mix of textures and increases, followed by a section in stockinette sts and regular increases. Work is divided for lower body and sleeves to be worked in separate pieces. The lower body is worked back and forth in stockinette sts until the hem, which is worked in textures and rib-pattern. The sleeves are worked top down in stockinette sts until the edge, which is worked in rib-pattern. The buttonbands are worked back and forth in rib-pattern along the fronts, from picked-up and knit sts.
