Picnic Basket Shawlette
A lovely shawlette in four variations… all feature a basket weave patterned body that is simple to learn and quick to knit. It can be shaped either as an asymmetrical right triangle or as a skinnier symmetrical isosceles triangle. Either shape can be edged with a ruffle (worked in short rows as you go) or a crocheted chain edging (added after the body is worked.)
The size of this shawlette is easily customizable, and if you’re not afraid of a little arithmetic, the pattern notes include instructions for calculating the required yardage for any size and combination of features. But if you think math is no picnic, use one typical skein of fingering weight yarn to get the sizes shown below.
This pattern is especially well suited for hand painted yarns, since the texturing of the fabric breaks up any potential pooling of the colors.
The following sizes and variations can be achieved with 440 yards of fingering weight yarn:
- Isosceles body with chain edging – 70” (177.8 cm) long x 7.5” (19 cm) wide
- Isosceles body with ruffled edging – 58” (147.3 cm) long x 8” (20.3 cm) wide, including ruffle
- Right triangle body with chain edging – 54” (137 cm) long x 11” (27.9 cm) wide
- Right triangle body with ruffled edging – 47” (119 cm) long x 11” (27.9 cm) wide, including ruffle
The Basketweave Pattern is both charted and written.
Skill level: advanced beginner - requires garter stitch short rows (ruffled edging only) or crocheted chain stitch (chain edging only)
