It is always fun to play with an idea to explore various methods of achieving a particular goal. In preparing for this sweater design, I played with alternative methods of transitioning between two different colorways. The transition is often called a fade, and the usual method is to alternate the two colors in a planned sequence of complete rows or rounds of each color as I did in the Gray-dient sweater. This works best if the two colorways are similar. But if they are very different, it just looks like a series of stripes between two solid bands of color. By experimenting with different stitch-by-stitch color transitions, I arrived at this method of fading between two very different colorways, resulting in bands of vibrant colors with no hard lines of delineation between them. I call these transitions “playful fades.”
