Pleated Ripple Cowl
This cowl crochet pattern runs up nice and quick. No color changing, as we let the RH Unforgettable yarn do that work for us. One skein does the trick. Giving us a lovely 32“ cowl. This versatile cowl can be worn on a cool summer’s evening, or tucked under your jacket in the dead of winter.
This pattern is worked in Vintage Ripple Stitch. We are simply playing with the gauge a bit to get the lovely ripples. Mickey, from the Crochet Crowd (no affiliation), does a wonderful You Tube tutorial on the this stitch if you require a little bit of extra help with it. Just do a search and it should pop right up.
You can easily adjust this pattern to the length and width you desire. To adjust the width, work in multiples of 9+1. To adjust the length, simply continue the pattern repeat to desired length, end on a R 5 of the repeat, and finish off as instructed.
I hope you enjoy making all the pretty colors.
Gauge
Gauge, though not important for size in this pattern, is important to achieve the pleating. You need to work in a tight enough gauge to pull the work into the pleats. I used a 5mm hook for this purpose. If you are a loose hooker, you may need to go down a half a hook size or so.
Gauge is approximately 1 1/2 chevrons (measured over the sc area of the pattern) per 4”. I find this yarn to vary in thickness, so this measurement is an approximate.
A friendly word of warning
This yarn does not frog well. If you need to practice the stitch, I suggest using a different yarn prior to embarking on your cowl. If you do find yourself needing to frog the Unforgettable yarn (fitting, as you won’t soon forget the experience) go slowly, and if you hit a snag, use the blunt end of your darning needle to pull apart the offending fibers.
