Gauge: 28 sts & 40 rows = 10cm / 4” over St st with yarn A (Merino Single) on 3mm needles, after blocking.
28 sts & 36 rows = 10cm / 4” over St st with yarn B (Kid Mohair Silk) on 3mm needles, after blocking.
Be sure to check gauge and block both yarns and adjust needle size as necessary to obtain same stitch gauge for both yarns. You might require a different needle size for each yarn. Please make sure to take note of row gauge, as you will need to know it!
Needles & Hook: 3mm / US 2½ circular needle, 40cm / 16” length AND needles suitable for working small circumferences in the round
3.25mm / US D crochet hook (or larger) for Crochet Provisional Cast-On
Two 3mm / US 2½ double pointed needles for working I-cord stalk (optional)
Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.
Notions: 4 stitch markers (including one unique for beg of round), smooth waste yarn (for provisional cast-on), tapestry needle, pompom maker (optional)
Notes: The PokaPoka Hat is a reversible double layered hat worked in two different textured yarns, and with multiple depths and top finishing choices. It is worked as one piece in the round, but in two sections; like two hats attached together at the bottom. First, one half of the hat is worked from a crocheted provisional cast-on using the Merino Single yarn. Once completed, the provisional cast-on is removed and a second hat is worked in the same manner as the first, but with the Kid Mohair Silk yarn. Once both halves are completed, one hat is tucked inside the other to form a reversible double layered hat. It is important to knit the first half with the smoother yarn (Merino Single) as it is too difficult to see the stitches worked in mohair for removing the provisional cast-on.
There are two lengths given for this hat - short for a more fitted watch cap style, and a slouchy beanie style. Choose the length you prefer, noting the difference in yarn requirements. The brim can be folded up to different heights as well, or even double folded or rolled. All will affect the depth of the hat differently. Different top finishings are also given - a basic embellishment-free top, a mini pompom, or a stalk. You can choose different combinations of tops for each half of your hat. Row gauge is essential for making sure both halves of your hat are the same length and will fit neatly inside one another when completed. Different yarn types will yield different row gauges. Please swatch both yarns A and B and be sure to block as yarn can grow. Record the final row gauge for both yarns once the correct stitch gauge is achieved.
