CONSTRUCTION
The skirt is worked across the whole round with vertical stripes. The skirt is worked
sideways in the circumferential direction and when the desired hip circumference is reached, the skirt is then knitted or sewn together to be joined in the round. A waistband that is 2 cm high is worked so that an elastic band can be inserted. It is recommended to begin with an open cast on. An open cast on is also called a provisional cast on, which provides for the use of waste yarn that is later removed to reveal “live” stitches. The first stitch at the top adjacent to the waistband and the final
5 stitches at the bottom of the skirt are always worked as garter stitches. Stitches are then picked up at the top at the single, garter selvedge stitch and the waistband is completed. The conical shape of the skirt is achieved by working short row shaping within the stripes.
