This pattern was written for the KC Yarn Crawl September 2023 for Yarn Barn of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. It is inspired by the native grasses in the area. Rebecca teaches classes at Yarn Barn and has a passion for native plants and the support of a healthy, sustainable ecosystem.

This hat uses a single color per row and slipped stitches to create outlines of grass like the tall grasses of a field in late summer. The pattern uses a form of micro striping called helical knitting that eliminates color jogs at the color changes. The lighter color creates an outline of prairie grasses, while the non-slipped stitches and contrast color cooperate to make a darker background. Working this pattern in one color will make the slipped stitches and cables subtle.
