Pris's Checkerboard Insertion
I modified this reversible, unusual 3-row pattern from 1918 Priscilla Cotton Knitting Book, figure #80, page 36. It’s easy to memorize the 20-stitch pattern and there’s only 1 purl stitch per row. I added 4 stitches to the original pattern and moved a couple of stitches to make the smaller side eyelets more visible. This narrow strip is called an insertion but could easily be used as an accent afghan strip between wider strips – or even a bookmark in fine thread! Have fun with it!
Skills needed: long-tail cast on, slip a stitch purl-wise, knit, purl, knit 2 stitches together, yarn over, slip 4 stitches over a yarn over, k1-p1-k1 in a previous row’s yarn over and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.
2 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make 12 rows (about 1 inch) by 20 stitches in the stated gauge.
