Professor Trelawney's Carpet Bag
First introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Professor Trelawney is the professor of Divination at Hogwarts. Vague and neurotic, Trelawney is described by actress Emma Thompson as “mad as a bucket of snakes.” Both Thompson and costume designer Jany Temime concurred that Trelawney was someone who didn’t take proper care of her appearance, and they gave the Divination teacher flowing, mismatched outfits and wild hair. Embellished tunics and mirror fabrics set the vibe for someone always trying to look into the future, in contrast to her inability to see in the present as demonstrated by her enormous coke-bottle glasses.
Started from the top down with a provisional cast on, this carpet bag-style tote—a replica of the one Trelawney carries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix—is worked in a combination of stranded colorwork and duplicate stitching. Gentle increases push the bag out in a trapezoid shape that is finished with a three-needle bind off. Flaps are then worked at the opening to enclose the handles, with an optional cotton fabric lining sewn in for added structure.
