Pupu Springs Mitts
Imagine clear turquoise water, the surface rippled by a light wind and the motion of some underwater currents, and the intertwined roots of nearby trees …
These are Te Waikoropupu Springs (called Pupu Springs by the locals), the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand and a sacred place of the Maori people.
Pupu Springs Mitts are part of a small collection of mitts featuring a decorative flap that shapes the upper part of the hand and defines the thumb hole when folded over. They keep your wrists and palms warm while leaving your fingers and thumbs free to move.
Recommended yarn: These mitts are worked at a gauge typical for sport weight yarns, but for a warm and dense fabric, choose a light-DK yarn as shown in the samples. Yarn with some stretch and good stitch definition works best for the cable sections.
Measurements (unstretched) for sizes S (M, L):
Bottom edge and cable section: 16 cm/6¼’’ (18 cm/7’’, 20 cm/7¾’’)
Wrist: 13 cm/5¼’’ (14 cm/5½’’, 16 cm/6¼’’)
Hand circumference (including thumb): 19 cm/7½’’ (20 cm/7¾’’, 22 cm/8.5’’)
Length: 23 cm/9’’ (adjustable)
The mitts are designed to be worn with a few centimetres of negative ease around the hand.
Skills required: Knitting and purling flat and in the round, casting on (using the cable or knitted method) and binding off, cabling over three and four stitches, increasing and decreasing stitches with different methods and working short rows and i-cords.
The pattern includes descriptions and links to online tutorials for increasing and decreasing, working short rows and i-cords, and cabling without a cable needle.
Both charts and full written instructions are given for the cable sections.
