Quatrefoil is a five-panel laceweight shawl, slightly larger than a semi-circle to allow it to drape nicely around the neck. A beautiful Estonian lace pattern, worked over the whole shawl, is framed by a simple garter edge and finished with a beaded picot bind-off.

Yarn Notes:

Laceweight Yarn - Approximately 1025m (1120 yds)

I used a 75/25 merino/silk blend which I dyed myself – that blend gives a nice sheen to the finished shawl, but also has enough grip and give to be able to work the 5/5 cluster stitch. Fibres with a high cotton/linen/flax/etc. content may make it challenging to work the stitch.

Notions:

Blocking pins, blocking wires, blocking board, needle to weave in ends. Crochet hook small enough to fit through the seed beads.

145 size 8/0 seed beads for beaded picot edging (make sure to buy more than this, to account for the holes of some seed beads being too narrow to allow a crochet hook through them).

Gauge:

28 sts and 40 rows to 10 cm/4 in over lace pattern using 3.25 mm (US 3) needles, blocked.

It’s not essential to match this gauge, but your gauge will affect the finished size and the amount of yarn used. Be sure to purchase extra yarn if you choose not to match gauge.
