Ramberg Kep
Rambergstranda is a crescent-shaped beach on the Lofoten Islands of Norway. Since it is within the Arctic Circle, its waters have a darker blue. The colors in the body of this kep represent the white beach sands giving way to golden grasslands against the deep blue colors of the northernmost oceans. The gold and red peeries represent the wildflowers that border the path to the beach. The crown colors—gold radiating out to white—represent the 24 hours of sunlight that the region experiences between May and July, known as the Midnight Sun.
I gradated both the pattern and background colors, using opposing value movements. I emphasized the central band of the main motif—representing the traditional X’s and O’s found in Norwegian colorwork—by using the highest contrast of the lightest contrast color of Natural against the darkest background color of Dark Navy. This transitions out until you get to the darkest contrast color of Yellow Gold against the lightest blue background of Sky Blue. For the crown, the colors begin with the lightest contrast of Natural against the Dark Navy background because it has the small checkerboard design that echoes from the central high-contrast band of the main motif. Then the values transition through the crown until you arrive at the center with the Yellow Gold against the light Sky Blue to represent the center of the Midnight Sun.
