This baby cardigan was designed in remembrance of a cardigan which was made many years ago for my first-born daughter by Marie, a friend of my mother’s.
The pattern is written for 2 sizes, but varying your yarn and needle size can make a garment from 18”-24” finished chest.
SIZE….. 20 gauge…… 18 gauge…… 16 gauge
Small….. 18” (46cm)….. 20” (51cm)….. 22” (56cm)
Large….. 20” (51cm)….. 22” (56cm)….. 24” (61cm)
The construction is bottom-up, with seams at the shoulders. The sleeves are picked up around the armholes and knit in the round. The buttonbands are picked up and knit in rib on both sides.
The design is unisex and makes for a classic cardigan using a variety of stitches to keep you interested from start to finish.

I remember Marie – a loving, generous woman as well as a talented knitter. She lived a few houses away from us when I was a child and was a good friend to my mother. Our families would get together for holidays, parties, and barbeques.
When I was pregnant with my first child (and not much of a knitter myself), she made a lovely little sweater for my baby. I was so surprised as well as amazed at the design – a ribbed yoke with a block stitch section in the lower body.
For many years I thought of recreating that little sweater, and this winter I finally designed it from my memories. My model uses thicker yarn (hers was fingering weight). I hope the pattern will be used to provide warmth to babies in need.
