In Autumn, the Shetland hills glow a beautiful reddish purple, dyed by the colours of the heather. Knitted flat, in a familiar Shetland lace pattern, these simple mitts remind me of a favourite landscape, and a favourite time of year

Kate Davies Designs Milarrochy Tweed (70% Wool; 30% Mohair; 100m / 109yds per 25g ball)
1 ball of each of the following shades:
A Gloamin’
B Buckthorn
C Campion
D Cranachan
Needles and Notions
Gauge-size and below gauge-size needles (2 sizes smaller) for working mitt
Below gauge-size needle(s) of your preferred type for working small circumferences for thumb
Tapestry needle
5 small (0.5cm / 3/8in) buttons
Gauge
32 sts and 36 rows to 10cm / 4in over lace pattern worked back and forth.
Use 3mm needle as a starting point for swatching.
Size
To fit average adult hand, with 18-20.5cm / 7-8in circumference

Pattern notes
These mitts are worked back and forth, following a chart. Yarn is inserted for an afterthought thumb, which is picked up and knitted when the mitt body is complete. Buttonholes are formed, buttons are added, and the mitts are joined to fit snugly around the hand.
