Forget skinny scarves! This squishy brioche scarf is your ultimate winter accessory … and even better, the ultimate stash buster.

Remnant Unicorn is a delightful colour block scarf that is designed to use up all those Unicorn Tails and remnant nuggets of 4ply/fingering yarn left languishing in your stash. Even the tiniest amounts can be worked into this pattern.

Allowing the dominant 8ply/DK weight yarn to do the heavy lifting creates a beautiful marled effect with the lighter weight yarn creating pops of colour.

Remnant Unicorn quickly becomes an addictive knit as you race to see the next colour unfurl. No more boring scarf knitting! The resulting scarf with its interplay of the two yarn weights is as magical as a unicorn.

Construction:
Remnant Unicorn is knit from end to end, beginning with an alternative long-tail tubular cast on. The 8ply/DK and 4ply/fingering yarns are knit together throughout resulting in a super squishy marled fabric. Worked in brioche, each new yarn is joined in using a magic knot, creating a seamless transition between colours and minimal finishing as the knot snuggles into the brioche stitch. A tubular cast off completes the scarf.

Sizing:
One size - easily adjustable.

Adjust width by adding or subtracting multiples of two stitches. For more or less length, knit longer or shorter than suggested.

Yarn Requirements:
Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 8ply (100% wool; 437yd400m/200g) — 1 ball. (Frost)

OR 8ply/DK weight yarn of approximately 437 yards/400 metres. (white)

AND 4ply/fingering weight yarn Unicorn Tails and leftover nuggets totally approximately 100g or 437 yards/400 metres in length. (depending on the yardage of your yarn you may need more than 100g.)

Scarf is knit with yarn held double.

Sample shown in Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 8ply Frost and a variety of 4ply/fingering yarns coloured pink, green, grey, mauve, blue, peach, variegated and speckled.

Highly variegated yarns, particularly those with pops of contrasting colours or speckled yarns, work particularly well.

Original base yarn is a worsted spun machine-washable 8ply/DK yarn with a 3ply structure.

Yarn Selection:
When selecting the 4ply/fingering weight yarns, even the smallest remnants can be used. Group them with like colours so they seamlessly blend in. As an example, I worked a small piece of pale green that didn’t register a weight on my kitchen scales, next to a pale green and blue variegated. Working two remnants in a similar colour consecutively creates more of a colour blocked feel. The 4ply/fingering weight yarn goes quite a long way; as an example five grams knits up to approximately 2 ½ inches/6.5 cms.

Whilst I’ve used a pastel tone for most of my scarf, I included some slightly darker yarns for pops of contrast.
