Revolve Cardigan
Experience Level: Intermediate
A subtle helix of alpaca and wool swirls its way up this cardigan and around the back neck, creating just enough interest in an otherwise understated wardrobe staple. Soft a-line shaping, set-in sleeves, and wide fronts create a flattering shape that make the Revolve Cardigan one of your favorites to wear. I recommend knitting it a bit oversized (with some positive ease, as shown) for a casual look, or fitted (no positive ease) for a tailored look. For extra interest, keep it closed with a belt worn at the waist or hips.
Construction Details
The cardigan is worked in 5 separate pieces and seamed together. The pieces are worked from the lower edge towards the top. The cabled borders are worked with the fronts - each in one piece. When shoulder stitches are bound off on the fronts, the cable continues until it measures half of the back neck width. When this cable “tab” is connected to its counterpart, the shawl collar effect for the neck is created. The sleeve band is worked horizontally in ribbing and then stitches are picked up along one side edge and worked vertically in stockinette to the cap.
Techniques Necessary
• Cast on/Bind off
• Knit/purl
• Decreasing and increasing (k2tog, ssk, m1l, m1r)
• Cabling
• Picking up stitches (for the sleeve cuffs)
• Mattress stitch seaming
• Kitchener stitch or 3-needle bind off (if desired) for back collar.

Shown in Berroco Ultra Alpaca Chunky (50% Alpaca/50% Wool, 131yds/100g, color 7206 Light Grey) 6 (7, 8, 8, 9, 10, 11) skeins.
Gauge: 14 stitches and 20 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch using size 10.5 (6.5mm) needles. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Needles: US 10.5 (6.5mm) for the body and US 10 (6.0mm) for bottom edging. While this sweater is not worked in the round, I recommend using 24” circular needles.
Other materials: Cable needle (I recommend using a 16” circular needle as your cable needle for this project), tapestry needle, stitch marker, row counter.
Additional Notes:
• Sweater is worked in 5 separate pieces and seamed together.
• The cables are very tight to work because so many stitches are being crossed. For comfort while cabling, I recommend that the sweater is worked on a circular needle for extra flexibility and that you use a 16” circular needle (can be any size that’s smaller than a US 10.5) as the cable needle.
• Multiple elements of shaping happen simultaneously on the fronts. The cable pattern begins on the first row after the ribbing. As you continue the cable pattern, the front neck shaping (the decrease near the cable to shape the neck opening of the cardigan) begins on the seventh row after the ribbing. When piece measures 6”, you will begin working side shaping (decreases on the seam edge of the sweater to create A-line shaping) while still working the cable and front neck shaping. Finally, you will still be working the cable and front neck shaping while you shape the armholes. I recommend creating a check sheet to help keep track of the rows involved in each element of shaping and cabling.
