Right Side Up?
Pattern #5020
This unusually structured sweater jacket features the ever versatile garter stitch, I-cord edges, and one button for closure. There is a garter stitch triangle for a literal “shawl collar”. Because of the structure of the sweater, it can be worn right-side-up or up-side-down to equal effect.
One size fits most. In the right-side-up configuration, the circumference of the sweater is 44”.
I used handspun yarns for this sweater, but any heavy worsted weight yarn should work (see gauge below).
Finished Sweater Dimensions: Chest circumference of 44”; length from shoulder to hem is approximately 24” (depending on how the sweater is worn).
Yarn: I used 3 handspun yarns to make this sweater. They were heavy-worsted weight yarns, at approximately 8 wraps per inch. I used three colors of yarn: purple (approximately 470 yards); white (approximately 440 yards), and a purple-white blend (approximately 365 yards). Total yardage for the sweater is approximately 1275 yards.
Gauge: 3.75 sts per inch in garter stitch.
Needles: US size 9, or needle size to achieve gauge. I used long circular needles (at least 32” in length). You will briefly need a second set of size 9 needles to start the bind off of the shawl collar piece. I also used two long, smaller size circular needles as stitch holders for attaching the collar to the front and back sections.
Additional Notions: Stitch markers, stitch holders; darning needle for seaming and weaving in ends; one large button (I used a vintage plastic button from my button stash that is 1 3/8 inches), small amount of yarn in contrasting color for provisional cast-on.
