Ritual Shawl
Shawls are a welcoming canvas for stitch exploration. The variety of shapes, textures, sizes, and styles make for an infinite set of possibilities. This shawl is called Ritual to celebrate healthy, hope-filled and heart-centered habits. There are the rhythmic, repeatable, mindless parts (stockinette body); there are openings and pathways (bordered eyelets), and there are intriguing mindful, shifting parts surrounding it all (lace edging). We navigate all of it and invite beauty.
Shawl Construction: No long final row cast off!! The lace edging is knit on as part of the shawl bind-off. Lace instructions are written and charted.
Suggested Yarn: DK Weight; 700-900 yards (640-825m)
Color 1 – 250 yds (230m)
Color 2 – 250 yards (230m)
Color 3 – 230 yds (210m)
Sample Gauge: 20 sts and 28 Rows over 4 inches (10 cm) measured in stockinette stitch, knit flat, unblocked
Sample size is 56” wide x 32” midline after blocking; yarn gauge will determine final size
Want a larger shawl like my navy and yellow-green version?
Hold fingering weight yarns doubled like I did in this project.
Needles & Notions:
- 24 – 47” (60-120cm) circular needle, US 6/4.0mm
- 4 Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Single DPN, US 6/4.0mm or smaller (optional, see Pro Tip 3)
Use any yarn that creates the final result you’re looking for; your gauge will determine yardage required and final size. The pattern includes yardage information to help you avoid playing yarn chicken.
This shawl was designed to be a warm reminder of the people behind the yarn. Explore your stash! Find new dyers and fiber entrepreneurs to try! Use 1, 2, 3 or more yarns to create the finished piece that suits you best!
Please be sure your pattern is labeled v1.2 (Jan 2021)
Thanks as always for your support of my work, and a public THANK YOU to my amazing test knitters and tech editor.
